The Anthem Of The Heart


Yet another movie I see nobody talking about. The story is pretty simple but I did enjoy watching this movie. Not sure if I can call this a love story.. It is more like a teen angst story haha!

The main character, Jun Naruse, was a chatty little girl. Like most children, she had a wild imagination and her positive and bubbly attitude made her everyday life into an adventure. One faithful day while exploring outside, she stumbles upon a castle. She is surprised to see her father driving out the castle with a beautiful lady she had never seen before. 


She instantly thinks that her father must be a prince since he is coming from the castle with a "princess". Too happy to contain herself she goes home and tells her mother all about her recent discovery.
However, her mother's reaction is something she did not expect.
Turns out that the castle she saw did not belong to a fairy tale princess and instead the building is a love hotel. 
("A love hotel is a type of short-stay hotel found around the world operated primarily for the purpose of allowing guests privacy for sexual activities" from Wikipedia. Haha Japan knows their walls are made out of paper lol)
Long story short, after Jun's mother, finds out about her husband's infidelity the get divorced very soon after. But of course, the father has to be even a bigger piece of garbage and blame Jun for everything that happened. 
These events lead Jun to stop talking. She hardly talks at all whether she is at home, school or somewhere else.

The movie tells the story of her and 3 of her classmates trying to deal with their own set of problems. Jun and her classmates Takumi Sakagami, Natsuki Nitō, and Daiki Tasaki are suddenly forced to work together because their homeroom teacher decided to sign them up for the school's charity committee. The main chunk of the movie deals with Jun trying to get over her trauma while dealing with her newfound infatuation with Takumi and his singing voice.


I'm not calling this movie a masterpiece but it has a decent story and the animation and character design are nice. Tho there are some weird frames mixed in that kinda twist the character models and make them look very... funny?? Overall it's a good movie so I do recommend checking it out if you have nothing to do and want to watch a movie you have not seen before.

Chirin no Suzu - Ringing Bell

Chirin no Suzu (Chirin's Bell) is a short animated movie adaption of a picture book from 1978. It's a bittersweet story about a sheep named Chirin and how he gets consumed by his own negative thoughts. I can't remember when I first saw this movie, but I can say I have loved it for a loooong time! Maybe it's because I'm such a pessimist myself? The story starts relatively happy. Chirin is a young lamb living with his mother and other sheep on a pasture. His mother worries for him since Chirin has a tendency to wander off. That's why he was given a bell so that he could be found easier because of the sound. Chirin's mother explains to him, that the sheep cannot go beyond the fence because a wolf named Woe is living on the nearby mountain. Chirin is naive and doesn't really take his mother's warning to the heart, but promises to obey anyway. Months go by and one autumn night the wolf attacks the sheep that are sleeping in the barn...

Shiroi Kiba Monogatari

At this point, anyone reading this blog might wonder how many violent animated movies about animals I know... Well, let's just say the movies I have linked here are but a small fraction!  This movie, a 1982 adaption of White Fang -book, is very dear to me and not only because of the story. I first saw this movie when I was a brat and old movies like this one were VERY VEEEERYYYY hard to find online. Of course, they never had subtitles either! This movie never had a western release and wasn't really that big of a deal in Japan either.  I found the movie while watching anime from youtube when I was around 10. The title was in Japanese so for years I had no idea what the movie was called! At the time, all anime movies and episodes were cut in parts on youtube...
